ARTIST STATEMENT: In my work I am drawn to a number of factors: the contrasts of lighting, of colours, of textures, and unique angles of view. I watch for “moments” when these factors come together and make even the most common seem interesting. Day to day scenes remind me of the power captured in every “moment in time”.
I spend a lot of time looking for a unique perspective on what are often mundane subjects. Places or things we no longer see because they are embedded in our everyday existence. I focus on these and emphasize their exciting and intriguing qualities.
Each artwork challenges me in some way such as identifying if a perspective view field would notice, or technical challenges such as showing the play of light and colour on a bitter cold winter street. If I know how to do that artwork, start to finish, I will look for a new way to approach it. I am driven by the struggle of making it work.
After many years exploring and working in a diverse range of media, I now work primarily in acrylic paint on canvas or panel. My primary subjects are landscapes or cityscapes but I will divert to the occasional portrait or wildlife study when I need to loosen my structural layouts.
I describe my style as “Painterly Realism:” meaning that I stop short of Photo Realism allowing the viewer to see the work as a painting, a visual statement, rather than a photographic record.
I love the simple process of “seeing” and expressing the feeling of that “moment in time”.
